This was our last game before they divided the league up between the top six teams and the bottom six teams. The top six teams just play one another for a total of 10 games. They are all guaranteed to make the playoffs so they are just fighting for position. The bottom six teams have a lot more pressure. The two teams with the best record after these ten games are in the playoffs. The very last place team gets demoted to the 2nd league. There is a lot riding on these games and it is kind of like a playoff atmosphere before the playoffs start.
This is kind of the feeling we had when we played Kubin. They were in last place and we were playing at home. We felt like if we played well we would win by at least 20. We started out the game scoring often and unfortunately giving up a lot. I hit a three at the end of the 1st quarter to put us up 35-27. It ended up being a foreshadow of things to come for our team. The second quarter the game slowed down a bit but we managed to have our lead grow and at halftime we were winning 57-44.
The third quarter is where things started to fall apart for us. We started to have our guys in foul trouble. Then our point guard had to leave the game because their center fell on his knee. Shortly after that two more of our players got into foul trouble. We had probably the worst quarter of the season. They scored 23 points while we mustered only 11 points for a full ten minutes, pretty sad.
The fourth quarter was back and forth. It seemed we would have a two or three point lead and then they would score and it went this way for about ten minutes. Finally they tied the game with about 17 seconds to go. With three of our five starters out of the game due to fouling out or injury we really wanted to finish this game without going to overtime. I had the ball up top and we ran the clock down to make sure that no matter what happened they could not get a shot off to win. I came off a ball screen and got doubled and passed it Matej who was open on left wing. He took two hard dribbles right to the elbow and let a jumper fly as the buzzer went off over their center. The ball looked great when it left his hand and it looked great as it went through the hoop, nothing but net. It was a very exciting ending for our team. We felt bad because we knew we should have played better. At the same time we are always happy to get a win, especially on a night when we didn't play particularly well.
I personally did not have a bad game but it wasn't a good or great game by any means either. I finished with 12 points, 5-9 from the field. I aso had 3 rebounds, 3 assists and 3 turnovers. Next game I will look to be more active and aggressive on both ends of the floor and hope that I can make things happen when the ball is in my hands.
We do not have a game this weekend because there are Cup Tournament finals, which we did not make.
Hopefully this will be a time for the entire team to refocus on what we must do in order to make the playoffs and we can improve in the next couple months starting with our next game.
