A win is a win

I love the sport of basketball for many reasons. One of the reasons is because each game is always different.
Two weeks ago we played Poprad and we played pretty well. The only problem was that the other team played better. They happened to catch fire beyond the three point line and there wasn't much we could do.

This week we played a home game against one of the weaker teams in the league (at least according to record).
Dolny Kubin. I have no idea what that stands for. We managed to win a close and very unimpressive game, 76-71. After a rough first quarter both personally and as a team we had a strong second quarter and went into the half up 43-30. We wanted to push the lead to twenty points in the third and then we could really control the game in the fourth quarter. Well our plan didn't work very well. They picked up their defensive pressure, we did not. They outscored us 25-13 in the third quarter and even took the lead for a short time in the fourth. I didn't do much at all in the second half but I tried to keep my head up and do the right thing whenever possible. With less than a minute to go in the game we were up by only a single point and I had the ball on the wing. I threw it in to our center in the post. They double teamed and he made a great pass to our wing guy under the basket to give us a three point lead. After a time out we stressed that we could not let them hit a three. We played strong defense and they forced up a contested three pointer which I was able to rebound and was immediately fouled with just 14 seconds remaining. All I had to do was put my free throws in and the game would be won. I shot them and they hit nothing but the bottom of the net and we ended up winning by five points.

Those free throws were the bright spot in a game where I didn't feel like I played as well as I should have. After seeing my stats of 15 points, 7 rebounds and 3 assists I saw that they were all right below or above my season averages. However, as every basketball fan and player knows stats don't tell the whole story and I felt like I could have been a bit more productive in each area and we would have been able to win the game handily.

Really this game showed what makes the sport of basketball so great and different. Two weeks ago we played a better game, we played a better team, but the most important thing was that we lost. This week we didn't play well, we played a poor team, but the most important thing was that we lost. Crazy but that is how the game of basketball goes.

Over the next four weeks we play our five remaining league games. We are currently still one game out of the playoffs and would love to sneak in for the final spot or two in the playoffs. Only time will tell, but the season has sure gone by fast.

Cheers...
