This past week we played two very important games. We played the other two teams that had a chance of making the playoffs in the final two spots. One Wednesday we played Komarno, a team that was one game ahead of us in the standings. We played them at home which proves to be a great advantage in this league. David Toya, who we signed about three weeks earlier really had a great game along with Vince Polakovic. Vince is the leading scorer of the league. However, I wasn't playing a very good game at all. Actually it was perhaps my worst game of the season and it was a terrible time to have that bad game. Fortunately for us, I don't think Komarno was playing one of their best games either. We signed a new center from Serbia who we were able to throw the ball to in the post. He came through with big baskets in the fourth quarter and we were able to pull out the win 76-68. The win was huge for our team as it put us in a 3 way tie for the final two playoff spots.
Then we played a game Saturday. It was at Poprad, home of Zach Ingles, a friend of mine and one of the top scorers and players in the league. If we won we would be tied with Komarno for the final two playoff spots, if we lost we would be one game out of the playoffs with six games to go.
Poprad came out in the first quarter and shot the lights out. If anyone knows Zach they know that if he is feeling it he can hit tough shot after tough shot with ease. This is what happened against us. The real trouble was that it wasn't just him but there entire team. Guys who we felt didn't weren't great shooters were hitting threes like free throws. They wound up scoring 37 points in the first quarter. Obviously some of this was our fault and we should have played better defense. On the other hand we had to tip our hat to Poprad and recognize how well that they played. We continued to stay close in the game after being down ten points in the first quarter. However, everytime we made a run they seemed to hit a big shot. We cut the game close in the fourth quarter but like they did all game they would hit a shot that was to much to overcome.
I personally played very well with 25 points, 7 rebounds and 3 assists but on Saturday it wasn't enough and I would have traded a poorer game for a win that is for certain.
It seemed it was the best game that Poprad could possibly play and it happened to be against us. Sometimes games like that happened and we had to tip our hat to the opposing team.
Now we have 6 regular season games over the next 5 weeks. If we win all six games we are guaranteed to make the playoffs. If we lose a game then our destiny is out of our control and we have to hope that Komarno and Poprad would lose another game.
More to come
