The first game of the season did not go exactly as planned. We played Wurzburg which is known as a basketball city and was touted going into the season as the team to beat in the Regionalliga and has plans to move up in the next league by winning the Regionalliga this year. There were a lot of things that could have gone better for us in the game but I think the biggest thing going against us was our lack of experience. We had one of our key players out for an indefinite amount of time and we had 3 players playing their first game with us after playing two leagues below us last season. With that said Wurzburg had a very deep and experienced basketball team and didn't seem to lose and depth as they went to the bench.
I was joined on our team with Marcus Vanderheide. He was playing his first professional game and didn't disappoint anyone. After a rough start by our entire team in the first quarter and being outscored by 16 points, we had a strong second quarter in which I was able to finish with about a 25 foot three pointer at the buzzer going into halftime. However, we were still down by 15 points heading into halftime but were much happier playing competitively with perhaps the top team in the league in the second quarter.
The third quarter was once again a rough section of the game in which they built a 23 point cushion heading into the final quarter. But, one thing I found out from my team last season is that no matter what the score is they never give up. We could have called it a game after being down 16 after 10 minutes of play but we didn't and we weren't going to give up ten minutes early. We were able to cut the lead to 12 points with about 4 minutes to go but that was as close as it got before being down by 18 when the final horn sounded.
As a whole our team made good defensive pressure. The problem was that we gave up to many easy baskets when we were not matched up correctly or didn't rotate properly and their isn't a team in the league that shoots threes better than Wurzburg. All in all I felt good about the game besides the first quarter in which we were outscored by 16. The final three quarters they outscored us by 2 points. I think that if we can play basketball like that and especially like what we did in the 2nd and 4th quarters we should be one of the top five teams in the league for sure.
Personally I thought I played pretty well except I missed a few shots that I normally make which would have made the game a lot closer. I thought my defensive was solid and I had many more assists than any game last season. Mostly due to Marcus. Marcus finished with 36 points including some threes but being able to do a lot of damage in the post. I was right behind him with 35 points. Currently we are 2nd and 3rd in the league in scoring and it would be cool if we were one and two while we were both here in Weiden.
I hope you enjoyed my post. If you have any questions about basketball or life over here feel free to give me an email. If there is anything that you would like me to comment about concerning the game that you would like me to comment on feel free to send me an email as well.
