With our last home game of 2009 yesterday we really needed a win to snap our losing streak. Wednesday we played a cup game against Cuxhaven and although we lost we did a lot of good things and our attitude in practice was good and focused all week long. I knew we were going to come out and play hard and I was very confident that we were going to win the game, no matter what happened.
Chemnitz boasts a solid team this year and one of the better defenses in the league so far. However, they didn't have a defense for Walt Baxley as he caught fire and torched Chemnitz. I have never seen someone score 50 points in person before so yesterday was a first for me. Walt is one of the best pure scorers I have ever seen and when he gets hot just give him the ball and get out of the way. This is what he did Saturday, for the entire game.
However, it was truly a team effort. We had Carl Embassa back in the lineup and it was good to have him out there as he is a very strong player who plays great defense and hustles. Whit Faye and Marcus Smallwood both made large contributions but everyone that played did something well. I think defense was really a very important part of the game for us and although we made mistakes we worked hard and that is the most important thing.
We now have a 7-5 record which is good enough to be tied for 4th place in the league right now. We have one more game before Christmas break, which is at Hannover next weekend.
Hopefully we can start another long winning streak as we head into the New Year.
